French vs. German: Clash of the Clans

Deciding to learn a language is always the hardest step. Or so you would think. The hardest part of learning a new language is deciding which language to learn. There are over 160 languages in the world from which you have to choose the language that you think will satisfy your need for adventure and excitement and of course, practicality. After all, language learning is not all about grammar, it’s also about culture and the people.

But what if you were made to choose between two languages? Say, French and German. What would you choose? Will you choose the language that sounds nice or one that is practical? The ease of learning or the thrill of conquering?

Two languages are going to go head to head: French vs German. Are you ready?

1) German is the most widely spoken native language in Europe

In the European Union, German has the largest number of native speakers compared to the other major languages of English, French, and Spanish. Clearly, if you had plans to travel the whole of Europe, knowing German will save you the time of searching for a dictionary.

2) German culture is part of the world heritage

The German-speaking part of the world has contributed immensely to the fields of philosophy, arts, and music. From compositions by Mozart to the enchanting poetry and novels by Goethe, the German language will expose you to a cultural treasure that is still unknown to many.

3) The German economy ranks number one in Europe and number four worldwide

Let’s talk about the present, and why German might be the language you need to learn. Given the general economic condition of the world, it should be noted that the German economy has stood strong. Knowing German might be the key to understanding how they have managed to beat the odds while others faltered. 

4) German and English are similar

So, being the official language of one of the greatest economies in the world or possessing a rich cultural heritage does not convince you to take up German. What might appeal to you will be the ease of learning it and how quickly you can master the language. German and English have common roots with Latin being their root language. Take these as examples: Haus-house, Kommen-to come, Blau-blue, and many more. This makes learning German easier for those with a command in English.

French is spoken on all the five continents. It shares this distinct status only with one other language, English. It is also the official language of 29 nations around the globe. An international organization of French-speaking countries, OIF, comprises of 77 member nations. From the peaks of Mont Blanc to the tiny Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, French presents itself as a truly global language.

From paintings by Monet to the literary masterpieces by Jean de La Fontaine, French can lead you into a world with a culture that is rich in arts and philosophy. But that’s not all. French architecture is known for its’ beauty and creativity and has its’ presence around the globe. 3) French is on the rise

The French-speaking population is on the rise, especially in African countries. This means more trade and business opportunities in the region which has a developing business environment. The increasing birth rate in France has statisticians predicting French to be the most spoken language in Europe by 2025. Watch out, German!

4) A language for learning other languages 

Coming second only to English, French has a lot of learners around the globe. The popularity in learning French is based on the ease of English speakers being able to grasp French quickly and about how useful it is from a career point of view. French is also preferred by those looking to learn the other Romance languages such as Italian, Spanish, and Romanian.


Now that there are four compelling reasons why one should learn each of the two languages, it’s time to vote.
